Earlier this spring, Miriam S. was unemployed and having a hard time finding work. Her cousin heard about our Spring Hiring Event, hosted in partnership with PODER, on TV and encouraged her to attend.
Even though she had many years of elderly care experience under her belt, Miriam wanted to try something different, so she decided to attend the event. With an interest in learning more about how mail is processed, she interviewed for the Package Handler position with UPS and was hired.
We talked with Miriam about her experience at the Spring Hiring Event and her work with UPS since she was hired this past April.
How was your experience working with the Skills?
My experience was very good. I felt very secure that even though I did not speak English, there was someone from Skills who could speak Spanish. They were by my side helping translate for me throughout the event. I also appreciated that the hiring manager from UPS could speak Spanish, so I didn’t have to feel too nervous during the interview.
How did it feel when you were offered the position with UPS?
I was really interested in the job so I was happy to get the call a few days after the hiring event with the offer.
What opportunities has this job provided you?
The pay is good and there is the opportunity to be a union employee after working with UPS for a couple of months. I also really appreciate that they will pay for me to go to school to learn English and allow me to work a flexible schedule.
