When Prophet H. graduated from high school in 2021, he planned to pursue a trade career but wasn’t set on a specific trade. He learned about an opportunity with the Inner-City Muslim Action Network where he could work and take courses to earn his NC3 certification, which would focus on machinery and welding skills, so he jumped at the chance and signed up.
When the program ended, Prophet turned to the ULON Resource Center, where they recommended Skills for job placement support. He visited our website and was interested in the Welder position with Freedman Seating Company (Freedman). Prophet applied through Skills, was hired, and started his new role this past January. We spoke with Prophet about his time working with Skills and for Freedman.
How was your experience working with Skills?
The experience was good. They helped me with my resume and getting a job a lot faster than I thought I would. The entire process took about a week from the time I applied and connected with Skills to being hired.
How did it feel when you were offered the position with Freedman?
I went in person for the orientation and welding skills test and was hired on the spot! I called my mom and dad and celebrated with them that night and was so happy from there. It felt great because it’s so hard to find welding work, especially in the city.
What opportunities has this job provided for you?
There are a ton of benefits at Freedman. They offer welding courses, so I can apply for other positions – there are a lot of factory and machine opportunities that I would be interested in.
What are your career goals and how is Freedman supporting them?
I would like to go into the electrical trade and make more money, as well as work on the skills I need to establish my own company. Freedman is helping by providing me the experience and there are a lot of people to learn from who give me tips as I learn the work. Freedman has all the resources I need.
Would you recommend Skills to other job seekers?
Yes, I definitely would recommend Skills because Skills follows through. The chances of getting hired are so much higher than applying on your own, and I really appreciated that.
