Shortly after graduating college, Ebenezer N. knew he wanted to work in the financial industry but was not sure what the right role was for him long-term. He wanted to help others and focus on developing his financial literacy, but he also wanted an opportunity where he knew he could grow professionally.
He learned about Skills through his connection to Chicago Scholars, a program he was a part of in college, that assists students with college persistence and post-graduation job readiness. When he visited Skills’ website, he saw a job posting for Morningstar’s Development Program and was intrigued by the opportunity to work on multiple tracks within finance and grow within the company. He applied and was hired as a Financial Product Specialist in April 2022. As he celebrates his one-year anniversary, Ebenezer shares his reflections on working with Skills and Morningstar.
How was your experience working with the Skills?
I really felt that Adam [from the Talent Acquisition team] prepared me well for the interview with Morningstar in terms of what to expect and resources. He provided me not just practice interview questions but also testimonials on the roles and the company culture, which was very helpful.
I like that whether or not you make it to the next interview, Skills always provides feedback. Adam even helped me with the offer because I had a few offers at the time, and he helped me understand the compensation package and how to let other companies know where I stand in the interview process.
How did it feel when you were offered the position with Morningstar?
I was excited because I was looking for a way to challenge myself and focus on my financial literacy, and I thought this was the perfect opportunity to development those skills. Morningstar was always my first choice, and it’s a great foot-in-the-door to the financial industry.
What opportunities has this job provided for you?
As a first-generation college graduate, I’m now a role model to my younger siblings. I’ve helped my sister with her resume, so what I’ve learned from Skills is trickling down so I can help others. Financially, this role is helping me support my family in Ghana.
Career growth-wise, my education has opened my mind to see what opportunities are possible and how I can work towards applying myself. I’m more confident and better at interviewing, and Skills helped me prepare for that.
What are your career goals and how is Morningstar supporting them?
I’d like my next role to be an expansion of the skills I’ve learned so far but also learn more. In my mind, I’m ready for the next thing because I’ve learned so much and I feel this role has prepared me to be confident to move into other opportunities at Morningstar.
Would you recommend Skills to other job seekers?
Yes, and I have recommended Skills to others! Adam encouraged me to be confident because I had strong skills. With my background as an immigrant and not fully understanding the hiring process, Skills helped form that bridge and guide me.
